Cause Of Avian Flu

Currently, the WHO (World Health Organization) Global Influenza Preparedness Plan has the World Alert Level set at:  PHASE THREE - thereby indicating disease is being caused by a new flu virus sub-type but not yet widely spreading throughout people.


HOW IS AVIAN FLU DIFFERENT?

Flu Definitions: Between Seasonal, Avian and Pandemic Flu, each are very different.

“Common” Seasonal Flu: A contagious viral respiratory illness which the majority of people have some immunity to. Various vaccines exist.

Avian “Bird” Flu : Born out of naturally occurring wild bird influenza viruses, the variant H5N1 can transmit to people, as people currently do not have immunity and a vaccine does not exist.

Pandemic Flu: Due to a lack of natural immunity, a virulent flu which spreads easily from human to human and causes serious illness on a global scale.


According to World Health Experts (with the last 'Hong Kong flu' pandemic occuring in 1968-69), we are now closer to the next flu pandemic than at any time before.


Born out of naturally occurring wild bird influenza viruses, the highly infectious type A variant H5N1 quickly and continually mutates to a higher pathogenicity and can acquire genes from other viruses - making it particularly worrisome to humans.


More resistant migratory fowl transfer the virus to less resistant domestic flocks with devastating consequences whereby close human contact and transmission allows the contagious virus to further evolve.

Transmission through feces, saliva and nasal secretions from infected birds contaminate people who then spread it to other humans through sneezing and coughing.

After spreading from wild birds to domestic birds (with the possibility to infect many other animal species worldwide), avian flu has now jumped to people causing severe and fatal illness, as at this time there is no immunity or vaccine.

Thus far, 3 influenza A virus sub-types (H5N1, H7N7 & H9N2) out of 15 identified avian flu strains have been known to cross the species barrier.

Concurrent epidemic outbreaks leading to a tipping point in the ease of human-to-human transmission will be the first sign the next flu pandemic has begun.
